Nature Knows Its Music

Nature Knows Its Music
By Olivia H.
Inspired by Joan Bransfield Graham’s Poem “Nature Knows Its Math”

Nature knows its music
Birds singing a happy song
Nature knows its music
Chipmunks practicing their harmony
Nature knows its music
Wood logs playing musical instruments like sticks
Beating on turtle shells
Nature knows its music
Leaves going to Paris to take music lessons
Nature knows its music

Chipmunk (by Josh W.)

Chipmunk

Looking at the ground,
sniffing for the nut that
was buried in the fall.
The ground was still hard
from all of the snow that
had fallen over the weeks.
The chipmunk looked across the road,
and then stated down the road,
and then back across the road.
A car starts coming,
going faster than the limit.
Teenagers pack the car.
The chipmunk races
across the road,
hoping to succeed in the race.
The race for life,
the race for food,
and then he stopped.
He stopped for no reason,
stopped in the middle
of the road,
stopped where the car was coming,
stopped, not thinking of anything,
stopped like a frozen tree
trying to escape the snow.
The car slammed
on the brake,
skidding on the water;
trying to steer away.
Still the chipmunk just
its and waits.
The car swerves
off the road,
into the woods, never to see the teens
the same again.
But what was he thinking?
What was the
chipmunk feeling?
Sad, depressed?
Did he even know what had just happened?
What had just happened?
The chipmunk looks around
and scurries off.
He didn’t know what happened,
or did he?
Did he feel the pain;
the pain everyone else had felt?
The anger at the chipmunk.

On Valentine's Day (by Alicia B.)

On Valentine's Day...

On Valentine's Day, you can bring cheer
to people who you think are very dear.
And give them love, which makes me queasy
just like eggs, when made "over easy".
And then you work flabbergastingly hard,
just to make everyone a Valentine's card.
There's also tons of red and pink hearts,
but all of this romance stuff tears me apart.
And as if all of that just isn't enough,
they cram all our mailboxes with this crumby stuff.
Those are the parts that I hate most, without a doubt
Now, I'll tell you what Valentine's is really about.
It's the thing that really makes Valentine's lovely and dandy
the lifetime supply of endless sweet candy!

Beautiful People (by Adriana D.)

Beautiful People

Beautiful people from all over the world
They can be Chinese, Japanese, with dirty knees
Beautiful people all shapes and sizes
Fat, skinny, tall and minny
Beautiful people all colors, all colors from the rainbow
White, Black, Tan and brown
Beautiful People from all over the world,
All shapes and sizes, all colors
All colors and from different places
Beautiful people from all over the world

Picnics (by Kaitlin S.)

Checkered blankets on the ground.
Enough food to go round

PICNIC TIME!
Here's a joke:
this food is for a dime.

Put your foof in this basket
we're off to the family gathering,
Now start lathering.

Get your food ready
'cause off we go.
So don't be slow.

Hurry to the place
that gives you good food.

PICNIC!

The Forest (by Autumn A.)

The Forest

The Forest
By Autumn
The forest
The place that I love
The place where I am safe
Home

The forest protects me
It lifts me high above the earth
It lifts me to the sky

When I am in the forest
I can reach out and touch Mother Nature
As she watches over me
She protects me as I cavort around
As I scamper up and down the trees
She and the forest are one
Both wise and gentle

When I break through the high branches of a tree
I leave my worries below me on the ground
As I walk into the forest
My fear departs me at the edge

As I walk through the trees
My spirit soars with the birds
But I do not try to catch it
My mouth sings the birdsongs
The birdsongs from the place that I can truly live
The forest
My home

Grandma (by Kevin B.)

Grandma

My grandma was always
Inspiring me,
To be a good person
She was cheerful
And happy
And loved me a lot,
Just as if I was her son.
But then one sad day
She went far away
And not just away
On vacation.
She went up
In the clouds,
So high in the sky
To heaven
And left us on earth.
She played a big part
In my life, yes she did,
And I think of her
Every day…
I loved her
More than imaginable,
And I miss her
Twice as much.
